Living in Charleston, SC

Interested in Charleston County real estate? Charleston has consistently been voted one of the friendliest cities in the U.S. It’s also one of the country’s most historic cities, having been founded in 1670 as Charles Town on the west bank of the Ashley River.

Today, the Charleston area is still growing and changing, and has a strong economy due to tourism as well as the Boeing production facility and a Volvo factory. The Holy City, as Charleston is nicknamed, has the country’s fourth largest port, which also contributes to the area’s job market.

What Are the Best Areas of Charleston County to Live In?

James Island

James Island is the closest suburb to downtown Charleston. This is a prime location to relocate to because of the various shops and restaurants within walking distance. This is also an easy area to commute to Downtown Charleston.

James Island County Park offers several amenities for you to enjoy as well. These amenities include camping and vacation cottages, crabbing, dog parks, wall climbing, a golf course, paved trails, horseshoe pits and more.

Downtown Charleston

One especially beautiful and interesting place to live in Charleston County is in historic Downtown Charleston itself, which has a fascinating and complicated history going back to the 17th century. This fun and charming city is nestled between the Ashley and Cooper rivers, providing an endless amount of activities and adventure. What was once the first English settlement in Virginia is now a prime area of real estate for those seeking residential properties.

Houses and condos are available in this historic neighborhood, but the downtown Charleston area has a unique type of home: the Charleston Single House. This architectural style is a long, narrow house with a porch (or “piazza”) on the side facing the side yard. Many of these single houses have been subdivided into two flats or four apartments.

Isle of Palms

The Isle of Palms is well-known for its stunning beach. For this reason, it is a hotspot for many locals as well as tourists. Because the Isle of Palms is surrounded by water, it is an ideal location to try various water sports. On the Isle of Palms, you can ride a banana boat, go paragliding, or ride on a jet ski. You’ll never run out of adventures here.

The Isle of Palms has a variety of types of properties available, from homes in a gated community to condo complexes and more.

Folly Beach

Folly Beach, South Carolina, is a true United States beach town, and is located just a few minutes from the historic area of Charleston. This world class beach is jam-packed with many activities to enjoy, including the Folly Beach Pier where you can enjoy both saltwater fishing and fine dining!

The Folly Beach area is a great place for people who enjoy a slower pace of life while still having fun with outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, eco-tours, and surfing. The sunsets on Folly Beach are truly awe-inspiring.

Next to Folly Beach are some local restaurants, stores, and cafes. When the sun sets, you can hear live music from all directions. The nightlife here involves live music and rooftop dancing, so there’s always something to do after dark.

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is another place many South Carolina residents enjoy living in. The neighborhood is known as one where there is always something interesting to do, from its parks and farms to its farmers market and coastal expeditions.

It is also home to many historical sites, including the Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens and the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site. Other notable attractions include both the Palmetto Islands County Park and Laurel Hill County Park. Outdoor events are regularly held in the neighborhood, including concerts, sports games, and other similar gatherings.

Harleston Village is also home to the oldest college south of Virginia, the College of Charleston.

West Ashley

Another neighborhood rich in history is West Ashley. As Charleston's oldest suburb, it was the site of a European settlement and the first one to take place in the state of South Carolina.
